This thousand-year-old city, declared to be a UNESCO heritage site, is one of Spain’s cultural and architectural treasures. Situated in the Madrid “Sierra” (mountains), it is one of the towns with the most history in Europe. Felipe II, the person who was the powerful monarch in the history of humanity, ordered the San Lorenzo Monastery to be built in order to commemorate the victory of the Battle of San Quintín. Felipe II moved to the palace in 1582 and died there 11 years later. The monarch wanted the monastery to be the residence and pantheon for the Spanish royal family.

Its rich history from the arrival of the “Vetone” Celtiberians around 700 BC and its wealthy economic past led to it being named a UNESCO heritage site in recognition of the huge architectural and cultural importance of its monuments, treasures of a city that magnificently synthesises the Castilian spirit of yesteryear, which was dominated by the inseparable concepts of military might and religion.

It is a cosmopolitan city, which is renowned for its scope of cultural, artistic and leisure activities. The origins of the city can be traced back to the temples of the Muslim Emir, Mohamed I (852 – 886), who ordered a citadel , known as ‘Al Mudaina’, to be built on the left bank of the River Manzanares, on what is now the site of the Royal Palace. After two centuries of battles, the Christians, under Alfonso VI, came to power and the construction of a protective wall, where the Rondas de Segovia, Toledo and Valencia, are today, marked the start of the development and expansion of the city. During the reign of Carlos III, Madrid underwent a great transformation and city began to enjoy certain public services and an urban layout which established the main thoroughfares, such as Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo de los Recoletos, Paseo de El Prado, or the Paseo de las Acacias. By the 20th century, every aspect of Madrid had been completely transformed and it had become one of Europe’s most important cities.

Located 45 km to the south-east of the capital, Chinchón is one of the most attractive and outstanding towns in the Autonomous Community Madrid. The highlight of the town is the most beautiful Medieval portico square in the world, thanks to its harmony and proportions. Chinchón is also famous for its wine, anisette and garlic.

It is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. Its origins can be traced backed to 220 BC, when it was invaded by Hannibal. The Romans then named it Helmantica. From the 13th century onwards, Salamanca has been home to Spain’s most famous university and which ranks with Cambridge or Bolonia. Strolling through Salamanca’s streets will delight your senses. The province is famous for producing the best cured hams and charcuterie in Spain.
